Fecal Transplants: The New Probiotic

So today we are going to talk about a controversial and amazing new procedure. Before you get freaked out we are going to talk about taking the fecal material from a healthy person and transferring it into an unhealthy person to make them healthy. I hope I have caught your attention. We are going to look at how this procedure is not only safe but there have been some amazing documented cases of people healing from Chrons, Colitis, and IBS.

Good Bacteria:

So if we are going to begin to start talking about this procedure we need to first look at how bacteria affects our health overall.

  • Bacteria in our gut acts as a second brain. This may sound far-fetched but let’s eat a giant bread basket at an Italian restaurant and you will feel really good before the bloating sets in. We create more neuro chemicals in our gut than in our brain.
  • When the bacteria profile in our gut get out of balance it clouds the mind leading to brain fog and fatigue.
  • Bacteria also play a major role in our immune system health. The gut holds 80% of the body’s immune system. Good versus bad bacteria can sway the whole body if it’s out of balance causing an immune system breakdown.
  • We should be keeping an 80/20 good to bad ratio of bacteria in our guts.

Fecal Transplant Breakdown:

So before you get grossed out by the title of the procedure let’s talk about the science and look at exactly how this procedure is performed.

  • At the core of fecal transplants is the science that started in Chinese medicine that is like heals like, and this is also a homeopathic principle as well.
  • When you take the microbes from the fecal material of a healthy gut environment and transplant them in a unhealthy gut the gut begins to be healed.
  • Bacteria have intelligence and can signal the gut to be healed and boost the immune system.

Fecal Microbiota Transplant

Stool is collected from a qualified donor that has been tested to verify the healthy microbes are present.

The strained and purified fecal material is then mixed with saline and placed in the patient through colonoscopy, endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and enema.

This procedure was created to help heal patients from C Diff infections that can cause fatal diarrhea and is created by the overuse of antibiotics.

  • Fecal transplants have been shown to help Chrons, Colitis, IBS, leaky gut, and many more conditions are being researched as we speak.
  • There are only 23 doctors in the US that will perform this procedure and it has helped save countless lives.

Conclusion:

On the less extreme of things I always recommend taking a high-quality probiotic daily. If you are someone with a serious gut situation and have exhausted all options, then I highly recommend finding a doctor who would be willing to perform this procedure. Stay tuned for the next blog where we will be discussing one of my favorite foods on the planet chocolate or cacao. Be blessed!
