Bacteria Goodness

It’s time to talk about the trillions of bacteria in your body. Did you know that there are 10 times more bacteria in your gut than there are cells in your body? What makes these good bacteria work effectively? Well, there’s a whole host of things that can make good bacteria thrive or die off very quickly. Let’s explore how bacteria plays a role in every system of our bodies, and how to optimize their population throughout the body to increase our health.

Fermentation

Eating and drinking fermented beverages that are unfiltered and unpasteurized is the best source of good bacteria.

Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage, and has to be my favorite drink of all time to get lots of beneficial bacteria in my body.

  • It’s a low-sugar, carbonated drink that can be a great replacement for soda.
  • You can buy it in a store, or make your own! I recommend checking out YouTube to find the best way to make your own Kombucha.

Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut is not for the faint of heart, but I personally think this fermented cabbage dish tastes amazing. This dish can have up to 1 trillion beneficial bacteria in just one tablespoon.

  • Sauerkraut can be store-bought or made at home.
  • Sauerkraut helps improve digestion and absorption of nutrients when eaten with other foods.

Kefir

Kefir is a fermented milk drink that has been consumed for thousands of years. Kefir is sour milk right before it turns into yogurt.

  • Kiefer comes in some delicious flavors.
  • For vegans there is coconut water kefir.
  • You can buy store-bought kefir or make your own at home.

Supplements

There are a lot of high-quality supplements that contain good bacteria strains.

  • There are many types of probiotic supplements like refrigerated or shelf stable liquids and capsules. Refrigerated probiotics are strongest in nature due to the preserving power of being stored in a cold environment.
  • I prefer different supplements for different conditions in the body. For example, liquid probiotics can be swished around the mouth to populate the oral cavity.
  • There are also topical probiotics that are beneficial to the skin.
  • There are also prebiotics called inulin or fructo oliagsachrides that feed probiotics that are in the gut.

Conclusion

Probiotics are the greatest medicine on planet earth. They have the power to change multiple terrains in the body and help the body heal itself of many conditions. In our next blog we will focus on oral hygine and the best practices to preserve the teeth.
