In my years of research no other nutrient can help your body overcome such a vast amount of issues. When you think of iodine you probably think Morton’s iodized salt which is not a source of iodine at all. In ancient cultures iodine was consumed through seaweed and sea salt consumption which was much higher in those days we didn’t have the amount of pollution and over harvesting like we have today. So how do we get iodine in our diet today? Let’s explore the many we can use iodine as it has to be the most versatile of all supplements.

Forms of Iodine:

  • Lugol's solution - This form of iodine is in a 2 to 5% solution which is the strength and amount of iodine in each drop. Lugol’s solution is an inexpensive but effective way to get iodine in the body.
  • Nascent - This form of iodine is a micronized version that is well absorbed orally in the body. This form is a little more expensive but is my favorite to use daily.
  • Seaweed and Sea Salt - This is an honorable mention of these 2 since daily consumption can help your body uptake and use iodine daily.

Health Benefits of Iodine:

  • Detoxification - Iodine is the greatest substance to detoxify the body! Iodine is anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and immune supportive. Iodine carriers a negative charge in the body this negative charge attracts substances that have a positive charges like heavy metals and pesticides.
  • Metabolism - Iodine will increase your metabolic functions and improve weight loss and digestive health.
  • Hormonal Health - Iodine helps your thyroid function properly. The thyroid is the organ that helps the body regulate your hormonal building and metabolic functions. Every 17 minutes all the blood in your body circulates through the thyroid so ensuring you have the proper amount daily is a must.
  • Immune system health - Iodine acts as a shield to the body in multiple ways. Iodine will fill your thyroid and protect it from toxic forms that are in our environment since we have had nuclear tragedies in the past and present. When the body begins to be saturated with iodine’s negative charge any positive toxin can’t suppress your immune system and make you susceptible to infections.
  • Topical wound care - Iodine has been used to clean wounds topically for a long time. The Lugol’s solution is usually the form used in this way and any time you got a shot when you were a child they use a iodine wipe before injected the substance in the body.

Ways to use Iodine:

  • Internally - Taking a high quality nascent form every day is the best way to get it in the body. Make sure you get the blood test to see how much iodine you need. Iodine saturates the whole body so usually the bigger you are the more you need.
  • Topically - Using a Lugol’s solution putting one drop on your tooth brush and brushing with it once a week helps keep the gums and teeth healthy. Rubbing a small amount over your thyroid gland or on the breast daily is a great way to absorb some in the body. Also, in an emergency situation, wiping a wound to clean it can be useful.
